Edna had called and made the arrangements with the horse farm. I knew nothing of what to expect, except that I was driving. It took us forty-five minutes to get there, and it was well worth the trip.

It was a horse rescue center, and the owner, Allison, gave us a tour first.

Which turned out to be a mistake. Susanna fell in love with every horse. The skinnier and more pathetic they looked, the more she wanted to take them home.

“We’re not equipped to take care of these poor critters,” Edna said gently. “But Allison and her staff know what they need.”

Susanna was only partially mollified.

We finally lured her away to the miniature horse pen. We fed chunks of carrots to the three minis there—a pure white, fluffy-coated little guy who resembled a big dog with a horse’s head, a newer arrival who was still painfully thin, and a tiny palomino named Queenie.

“Oh,” Susanna gasped when she saw her. “She’s beautiful.”

Allison chuckled. “And she knows it.”

She was a miniature replica of a full-sized Arabian. Her golden coat shone and her pale mane streamed out behind her as she romped around the pen—once the carrots were gone, of course.

“Any permanent health issues?” I asked, hoping Allison wouldn’t give too detailed a description of any abuse the horse may have suffered. That would break sensitive Susanna’s heart.

“There’s a fracture in her left hind leg that never healed properly. She can’t hold any weight on her back or she’ll pull up lame. But she’s trained to harness and can pull a small cart with a child in it. An adult would be too much weight.”

Edna had a shrewd look in her eye. I knew she was already figuring out how to stage cart rides for the kids on Halloween.

Susanna clapped her hands like a small child. “Oh, I want Queenie.”

“But we should wait a while before we take her home,” I quickly threw in. I’d given this considerable thought. Even though Edna would be pissed at me, I intended to keep the risks to a minimum until the vandal, now assailant and attempted arsonist, had been stopped. “It’s only been four days since the last vandalism.”

As I’d anticipated, Allison frowned. “Vandalism?”

And Edna glared at me.

I ignored her. “Yes, we’ve had some things happen in our town, but the sheriff’s department is close to identifying the culprit.” Not quite the whole truth, but I didn’t want this woman thinking it would be forever before we claimed the mini. “Um, can we adopt Queenie, sign any paperwork and all, and then pay you to board her until it’s safe to bring her home?”

“Hmm, the adoption process takes a day or two anyway.” Allison’s face cleared and she nodded. “I can keep her here, for just the cost of her feed, for a little while after that.”

If looks could kill… Edna was sending laser beams my way with her eyes. And poor Susanna looked like she was about to cry.

I reached for her hand and gave it a squeeze.
